As fine art begins to explore the cultural paradigm shifts brought about by mobile technology and the social Internet, I hope artists borrow more regularly from open source, Creative Commons culture as we develop and share our work. Social and digital media in particular, a breeding ground for retweets, screen grabs, and viral marketing, present an ideal venue for new ways to challenge rigid concepts of originality in fine art.”

- Cover Art, or Vito Acconci Gets a Follow Back

"One of my frustrations has been that people, when they graduate from college in Michigan, they kind..."

““One of my frustrations has been that people, when they graduate from college in Michigan, they kind of take the path of least resistance,” said Detjen. “And they sometimes decide to go to place like San Francisco, like the Bay Area, places like Chicago, places like New York, where there’s already a huge concentration of young people who are trying to do progressive things. And they sort of forget about the fact that they live in this place where there’s just an incredible amount of need. It was his writing about his lifestyle and, in the process, outing of our lifestyles by telling people what we were doing. There are some creatures who like to dance but do not like the light, and, for nearly a decade, before Hunter became a “name”—before “rock writer” became a part you played in the alley behind some concert hall—we were all invisible, a tribe of happy, insatiable shadows on the loose. We had all the perks of fame and none of the grief.”

-
DAVE HICKEY - THIS LONG CENTURY

This Dave Hickey essay has me thinking two things:

1. I need to reread Air Guitar.

2. His description of “new journalists” of the seventies seems to analogous to what many bloggers would like to be. But of course things are totally different now. It makes me wonder what’s happening right now that we’ll only fully digest decades later. Who are those “insatiable shadows on the loose,” and what are they doing?

Looks like I’ve got to go to Chicago pretty...

Looks like I’ve got to go to Chicago pretty soon.

britticisms:

The Cubic Meter of Infinity in a Mirroring Cube by Michelangelo Pistoletto

The first thing you’ll see when you step off the elevator on the fourth floor for “Italics: Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008,” opening tomorrow at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago is All, 2008 by Maurizio Catelan, a sculptural installation of “bodies” underneath cloth. It’s intense and introduces the show and its differentiation from traditional ideas of Italian art.

We had a media preview this morning and I did a short walk-through of the exhibit. It far surpassed my expectations, with a variety of different works in varying media including painting, sculpture, photography, video, along with numerous site installations.

Make sure you check out the labyrinth/maze in all white. You might miss it, mistaking the small entrance for a door or even some sort of optical illusion. Don’t be fooled! It is breathtaking and claustrophobic, but in the best possible way. And don’t forget to go down a blackened hallway and behind the curtain to see The Cubic Meter of Infinity in a Mirroring Cube by Michelangelo Pistoletto (photo above), an awe-inspiring installation that overwhelms the senses and completely re-arranges your sense of place and security in the body.
